Here is my story on the Pieraldi Surname.

In 1974, I was curious about my name. It struck me as impossible no other Pieraldi family existed in the world. And so started the search.

1970′s were spent looking through endless library files. Personal trips to Genealogy archives including New York.

1980′s were improved only slightly. My parents met a Pieraldi in New York. He spoke only spanish and was from Puerto Rico. More outreach and research found little information of substance.

1990′s found a first and substantial contact over the Internet. This substantial development came in an email. Juan Roman and I exchanged some basic facts about our family and the connection was made. In the years that followed more details and family history were shared. The facts checked and that is where the story really starts.

2000 – The family in San Francisco is told of this link and the real fun begins.

Introduction
Descendants of Luis Antonio Pieraldi
Compiled by Juan D. Roman
Generation No. 1
The Pieraldi family fIrst appeared in Corsica in the XV Century. They had come from Genoa, Italy but were not ofGenoese Origin. In fact the name ofPeraldi is an Italianization ofthe French name ofPairaud (or Parandon, bellow Latin). One of the earliest was Hugh de Pairoud of France (1100). According to the book Nouvel Armorial Corse, published by Jean Christophe Perticone, the Pieraldi family from Corsica write their surname “Peraldi”, and they first established themselves in Ajaccio and Cauro in 1540. One Antoine Peraldi (from Cauro) was given the title of Count by King Theodore 1 in 1736. Antother, Mario Peraldi, was a deputy in the Legislative Assembly in 1791. The surname is written PIERALDI only in San Martino di Lota, near Bastia to the north (Capo Corso\ Cap Corse).2

During the Spanish Colonial period, if the mother was not married, the Church would not recognize the marriage, and considered the child without a father. This change in surnames has been reflected the later generations that intermarried with the ROMAN family. Marla Vicenta was a servant ofthe Corsican brothers Felipe and Francisco.)

YAUCO:
The municipality of Yauco on Puerto Rico’s south coast between Ponce and San German has long been noted for the predominance of Corsicans among local notable families. The town was built along the flat land lying directly beneath the southern foothills of the island’s rugged western mountainous range founded in 1756 by a handful of criollo families. The municipality spans two ecological zones: one extending to the sea including flat fertile, well- watered land suited for sugar cultivation; the other reaching to the higher peaks of the island in the heart of Puerto Rican coffee country.
Land ownership posed few obstacles for early settlers, for in this sparsely populated region it was available in abundance. The measure of wealth in the eighteenth century was determined by ownership of slaves, for the land could only be exploited by the use of coerced laborers. Indeed, the last names of those who founded the town are synonymous with the large slaveholders of the epoch; the PACHECOS, QUINONES, ARENAS, and RODRIGUEZ clans were among the most noted families.
In 1812, the population of Yauco was 6,014; 9.5 percent were slaves.1 Coffee was grown in the hills surrounding the town and sugar was cultivated on the flat lowlands. Cotton and tobacco were also grown marginally as cash crops, and large pasture areas were grazed by an abundance of cattle. Unsettled land was available on the coast or in the higher interior. In 1812, over 3,000 cuerdas were categorized as hatos, and in the sierra there were 3,800 cuerdas of untitled terrenos baldios. The alcalde of the town was Jose PACHECO, a son of the town’s first mayor, Fernando PACHECO. The descendants of the criollo families founding Yauco maintained their local dominance through the early 1820s, but a decade later, precisely when the sugar economy was expanding rapidly, the town had been populated by numerous Corsican immigrants who began to ~~tLcontrol over local economic life.
The first Corsican to appear in Yauco was Domingo MATTEI. Shortly after arriving in Puerto Rico in 1814 he married Estefania RODRIGUEZ, a descendant of the small nucleus of hacendados who had founded Yauco. MATTEI began as a small pulpero but by 1821, although the only foreign merchant in the municipality, Mattei claimed assets of 8,000 pesos, over half of Yauco’s total commercial wealth. This immigrant pioneer and relatives in Corsica evidently communicated, for within a few years more Corsicans arrived and settled the town.
1In 1838, in a census taken of Yauco, there was a population of 8,128 inhabitants; 22.7 per cent were slaves.
becoming a naturalized citizen under the provisions of the Cedula de Gracias. Although the mechanisms of accumulation he used are unknown, by 1846 Negroni owned Yauco’s largest sugar hacienda, 940 cuerdas worked by thirty-eight slaves and a declared capitalization of 23,661 pesos. His economic power in the municipality was combined with his political influence. He had been mayor in 1843 and served intermittently on the town council.
Another early immigrant was Juan Bautista MATTEI, one of Yauco’s leading merchants in the 1840′s and 1850′s. He came to Puerto Rico directly from Corsica in 1835 and within four years of his arrival he had accumulated capital resources of over 27,000 pesos in property, merchandize, and slaves. In 1839 Mattei sent for his brother Antonio who was taken into the family business. Antonio married the daughter of Francisco Lluveras, a peninsular sugar hacendado with farms in Guayanilla as well as Yauco. The MATTEI family remained important creditors in Yauco through the 1850′s and 1860′s.
By the 1840′s the Corsican immigrants has become the major merchants and creditors of Yauco, and complemented their commercial operations with investments in agriculture. The last names of NIGAGLIONI, ANTONGIORGI, PIERALDI, FRATICELLI, SEMIDEI, BIASINI, AGOSTINI, and GRIMALDI were associated with commerce as owners of large tiendas in the town or small pulperias in rural barrios where coffee was beginning to flourish. Although Corsicans predominated, Spanish immigrants also became involved in commerce and agriculture. Guillermo COMMINS arrived from Venezuela in 1829, and Francisco MEJIA, a native of Cadiz, was well established in Yauco in the early 1840′S. Francisco LLUCH and Juan AMELL migrated from Catalonia in 1847 and together established an important commercial firm.

I have found all this information very interesting. I have been told that I am a decendant of the Pieraldi family through the Orengo blood line. I see that the Cedeno’s also lead back to the Pieraldi family. How would I re-trace my family history. My grandfather and grandmother were both from Yauco. My grandfather was a Cedeno and my grandmother was Orengo. I am very curious can you point me in the right direction?
